As the health care industry continues to adopt cost-cutting measures, extra funds for continuing education often are not available for risk managers. To help fill this gap, health law attorneys at Broad and Cassel have joined forces with the Florida Society for Healthcare Risk Management and Patient Safety (FSHRMPS) to set up education scholarships to help individuals in these ever-important positions stay abreast of rapidly changing issues in the industry.
The Broad and Cassel Sandra Collins Johnson Memorial Education Fund is named in honor of the longtime director of risk and insurance services for Broward Health in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Johnson passed away in April 2013 after a 10-year battle with cancer.
Scholarship funds donated by the firm enable risk managers to attend annual conferences held by the FSHRMPS and the American Society for Healthcare Risk Management (ASHRM).
“One of the core principles that guided Sandy’s professional life was doing the right thing, the right way, for the right reason,” said Vanessa Reynolds, Of Counsel at Broad and Cassel, who is a Florida Bar Board-Certified Health Law Attorney and is certified in healthcare privacy compliance (CHPC). “We can think of no better way to honor her than to afford other health care risk managers the opportunity to learn and embrace that principle.”
Thanks to partnerships with FSHRMPS and the Broward Health Foundation, risk managers Kristin Flahart and Nancy Flanagan received the first of these scholarships to attend teh FSHRMPS’ annual meeting and conference in August. Sandra Baysinger, Broward Health’s risk manager for ambulatory services, also was a recipient and was able to attend the national Risk Managers Association Conference in October in Austin, Texas.
