Clarity on Parity

The final regulations implementing the Paul Wellstone and Pete Domenici Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act of 2008 (MHPAEA) became effective for calendar plans as of January 1, 2015. The MHPAEA, which amended the Mental Health Parity Act of 1996, extended parity requirements to substance use disorder benefits and also requires parity in the application of any financial requirements and treatment limitations on mental health and substance use disorder benefits with medical/surgical benefits.
